Pipette calibration — gravimetric & NIST-traceable

Accurate liquid handling is the foundation of reliable results. BMCA calibrates single- and multi-channel pipettes gravimetrically, documenting accuracy and precision for CLIA and CAP.

Liquid handling you can defend in an audit

We evaluate accuracy and precision at each test volume using a gravimetric method with environmental correction, then document as-found and as-left performance — the detail CAP assessors look for.

Why it matters

A drifting pipette silently biases every assay it touches. Routine, documented calibration protects result integrity and removes an easy inspection finding.

Each calibration includes

  • Gravimetric testing at defined volumes
  • Accuracy (systematic error) & precision (CV)
  • Environmental correction (temp / pressure / humidity)
  • Per-channel evaluation on multichannel units
  • As-found / as-left results recorded
  • NIST-traceable certificate & dated label

// Frequently asked

Pipette calibration — gravimetric & NIST-traceable — common questions

How are pipettes calibrated?
Gravimetrically: we dispense purified water at defined volumes and weigh it on a calibrated analytical balance, correcting for temperature, pressure, and humidity. From repeated measurements we calculate accuracy (systematic error) and precision (coefficient of variation) against ISO 8655–style limits.
How often should pipettes be calibrated?
Many accredited labs calibrate every 3–6 months for heavily used or critical pipettes, and at least annually otherwise. CAP and CLIA expect a defined, followed schedule — we set and track it.
What volumes and channels can you calibrate?
Single- and multi-channel air-displacement pipettes across the common fixed and variable volume ranges. Each channel of a multichannel pipette is evaluated.
Do you provide a certificate for each pipette?
Yes — a NIST-traceable certificate per pipette showing as-found and as-left accuracy and precision at each test volume, plus a dated label.
Can you calibrate on-site?
Yes, in most cases, minimizing disruption. For pipettes needing repair or deep service we advise the best path to get them back in tolerance quickly.
