What we test, and why each part matters
A fume hood is only containment while it is moving enough air, in the right pattern, with the sash where the operator actually keeps it. Certification checks all three, because a hood can pass on airflow and still fail to contain.
Face velocity
Measured across a grid at the working sash height, compared to the target your facility or accrediting body specifies. Averages hide problems, so individual readings are recorded, not just the mean.
Airflow pattern
Smoke or visual tracer testing to show air entering and staying in, including around the sash edges and the work surface where reflux usually shows up first.
Sash and alarm
Sash movement, stops, and the low-flow alarm — a silent or disabled alarm is one of the more common findings we correct.
Documentation
A certificate with readings, target, sash height, date, technician and next-due date, plus a label on the hood that matches it.
