A Mohs surgeon in Texas may operate in Houston on Tuesday and drive two hours to a satellite on Thursday. The histotech market does not follow that geography. Practices in Lubbock, Amarillo, El Paso, Tyler and the Valley compete for the same small pool of trained Mohs technicians as Dallas and Austin — and usually lose.

Texas does not license labs — CLIA still does
Texas has no separate state clinical laboratory license. Laboratories operate under federal CLIA, with surveys conducted by the state health agency on behalf of CMS, and many practices choose CAP accreditation on top of it.
That sounds simpler, and it catches people out. There is no state inspector easing you into compliance before a federal survey arrives, and a Mohs lab performing frozen sections is high-complexity testing whatever the state does or doesn't require. Personnel qualification records, competency assessment, a current procedure manual, QC and equipment documentation are all in scope, and an unannounced survey is how most practices discover which ones are thin.
We document the personnel we place against the CLIA testing-personnel pathways, run the competency assessments on schedule, and leave the lab with records a surveyor can read without a guided tour.
