California is one of the states that licenses clinical laboratories itself, in addition to federal CLIA, and it regulates who may perform testing under state law rather than leaving that entirely to federal personnel rules. For a dermatology practice running frozen sections in-house, that means two sets of expectations sitting on the same bench.
